Renzo Piano’s Parliament Opened, Valletta, 4 May 2015.

Malta’s newly built parliament, designed by world renowned architect Renzo Piano, was officially opened this after noon by the President and Speaker. The Prime Minister and members of parliament were also present.

The occasion started with a handover of Palace keys by the Armed Forces followed by the guests walking up Republic Street for the official opening.

Architect Renzo Piano unveiled the  designs for the entrance to Valletta on Saturday 27th June 2009. This extensive project was expected to be completed by 2014. Piano’s plan include the new parliament being built in Freedom Square, restoring City gate to its original design of 1633, re building the Old theatre for out door performances, re furbish Valletta bus terminus and a lift from City Gate down to Valletta ditch.

Statue of Grand Master Jean de Vallette – Opening ceremony and day after

Statue of Grand Master Jean de ValletteOpening ceremony and day after.

Just a few meters away from the foundation stone, a new statue of  Valletta’s founder  Grand Master Jean de Vallette is being placed in a newly built  square  next to St. Catherine Church. This area was previously the police station, demolished as part of the Renzo Piano Regeneration of Valletta project. Built by sculptor Joseph Chetcuti this bronze statue is 2.5 meters long and weighs over 700 kilos. The Grand Master is wearing his armour, a sword and Valletta’s building plans in his right hand.

The official opening is scheduled for tomorrow 21st November 2012.
